Steven Spielberg quiere pedir disculpas a todos los tiburones por la prensa negativa que les ha dado su taquillera película Tiburón.

Por supuesto, fue la película más taquillera de su época, ganó tres premios de la Academia y disparó la extraordinaria carrera del director, pero desde su estreno, Tiburón ha perjudicado a la población de tiburones.

El thriller de 1975, basado en la novela homónima de Peter Benchley, dio a conocer a un nuevo asesino mortal y sembró el miedo en el público de Estados Unidos y otros países.

Antes del estreno de la película, los tiburones no eran vistos como la amenaza sangrienta que son hoy, pero una vez que Spielberg puso sus manos en Tiburón, se acabó el juego.

"Es una de las cosas que aún temo", dijo.

Según el investigador de tiburones George Burgess, la legendaria película inspiró a los pescadores a sacar sus propias barquitas al agua para capturar tiburones de 500 libras y demostrar así su valentía, lo que acabó dando lugar a la derrochadora afición del aleteo de tiburón.

El aleteo consiste en capturar tiburones y cortarles las aletas para venderlas, antes de arrojar el resto del cuerpo al océano. Aunque los tiburones podrían haber sobrevivido al aleteo, simplemente se habrían hundido en el fondo del océano y habrían muerto, puesto que ya no podrían nadar.

Las probabilidades de ser atacado por un tiburón son de una entre 3,7 millones, y es más probable que te caiga un rayo o mueras por envenenamiento accidental.

Pero, aun así, el miedo que rodea a la criatura Marina de dientes afilados no ha hecho más que crecer, con películas inspiradas en Tiburón como The Meg, Deep Blue Sea, The Shallows y Great White echando más leña al fuego.

"Lo que ahora sé, y que no se sabía cuando escribí Tiburón, es que no existe tal cosa como un tiburón rebelde que desarrolle el gusto por la carne humana", declaró a Animal Attack Files.

Debido a su reputación de asesinos a sangre fría, "nadie aprecia lo vulnerables que son a la destrucción", añadió.

"Es difícil que la gente apoye a los tiburones. A diferencia de las ballenas o los delfines, son difíciles de antropomorfizar… y de vez en cuando se comen a la gente".
